We’ve been making the rounds at CTIA in San Francisco this week with The BEAST and our new collaboration engine alpha running a rap battle game. The response has been amazing, and we’ve been pleasantly surprised at just how friendly and open-minded people have been.

You can check out the Flickr photoset here.

We will be around for most of the day tomorrow if you’re at CTIA and want to say hi. Just send me an email and it’ll go to my sidekick. (Yeah I have a sidekick, it rocks. Think differently? Comment about it and I’ll set you straight ;) )

We recently signed our first development agreement with a snowboarding team called “The Collection“. We can’t wait to use The BEAST in such a cool context - it’s going to be a lot of fun!

TOMO SOFTWARE AND ARRIX SPORTS PACT TO BRING SNOWBOARDING CHAMPIONS AND LIFESTYLE TO MOBILE DEVICES

Groundbreaking Professional Snowboarding Team The Collection Inspiration for Concept Which Will Offer Interaction, Community, Personalization, News and More

LOS ANGELES (September 26, 2005) — Tomo Software, a leading developer of technology for the creation of unique mobile device experiences, and Arrix Sports, the management firm for the groundbreaking professional snowboarding team The Collection, have announced a development agreement for the creation of a multi-faceted mobile offering based on the experience, travels, lifestyle and community of the snowboarding world. The concept, which will be built on Tomo’s proprietary and tested Mobile BEAST platform, will be refined over the next sixty-days in anticipation of a launch during the upcoming snowboarding season in the United States.

The Collection team riders, Ross Powers, Gretchen Bleiler, Kelly Clark, Andy Finch and Mason Aguirre, have captured championships and gold medals in every major snowboarding competition, including the Olympic Games, Winter X Games, US Open of Snowboarding and more. The team, established by the riders in 2004 as the first and likely most influential team in the sport, was created to establish a cohesive, defined platform that will support current and future leaders in the sport. The development of a mobile experience based on the team and their lifestyle is ideally suited to helping achieve that lofty goal.

“Mobile is everywhere, particularly among snowboarding audiences”, said John Arrix, president of Arrix Sports. We’ve been looking at the market for some time, and when we were introduced to the platform created by Tomo, we knew it offered significant opportunities and features that we haven’t seen anywhere else. We’re looking forward to the creation process and bringing The Collection to phones everywhere in the near future.

Initial stages of development take advantage of the broad and diverse offerings made possible through Tomo’s BEAST platform, which is a highly-customizable yet intuitive AI-driven storytelling engine with powerful socialization tools. The dynamic platform includes instantly updateable graphic & story components which will be based on the evolving content of the everyday life and competitions of The Collection team members, advice, tips, and more.

Users will have the opportunity to create and personalize their own character which will live and interact in the virtual world, following storylines and progressive paths to improve their skills, meet new friends and achieve aspirational goals on and off the slopes. Messaging and blogging components, a virtual store featuring the latest fashions and boarding equipment, group formation and scheduling of activities and much more will make the always-on experience a lasting community for not just snowboarders, but fans of the lifestyle and others looking for a strong sense of community with significant entertainment components.

“There are a number of fields and properties that the BEAST is well suited to present. Action sports and snowboarding in particular are high on that list because they thrive on community”, said Tomo co-founder and CEO Jason McDowall. “The Collection has made their mark as a one-of-a-kind team of champions who are dedicated to the evolution and future of their sport. The mobile concept we are developing will aid in their effort and truly offer fans a chance to be a part of the team in this virtual world.”

Through choices made by users about their interests, activities, clothing, friends and more, individuals will have an opportunity to shape their own character within the virtual world of The Collection. These activities will allow for the formulation and following of story lines and activities, provide a platform for establishing virtual and real world relationships and prepare the users to compete in scheduled events and competitions.

“Sports and other entertainment properties are striving to promote community, build awareness, and extend their brand into the exciting mobile space”, said McDowall. “We’re thrilled to be working with one of the best in the business to make this dream a reality.”

We at Tomo have finally taken some time from our busy sales efforts to create an official product brochure for our mobile massively multiplayer platform. We call it “The BEAST” for “Branded Entertainment And Simulation Technology”.

Some of the major features are:

- Story-driven artificial intelligence that simulates a virtual world in real-time

- Characters are always playing, even while you are away. Each time you check in with the game, or the characters send you a message, new things have happened

- The content is all server-pushed. You can deploy a game and modify and add content without any new downloads. It can be an ever-changing experience which is completely new to the mobile world

- Games may incorporate a full online store and character customization toolkit. Your users can customize to their hearts content and have their decisions affect the characters’ lives

- Our content development kit is intuitive, powerful, and allows the easy creation of unique games that tell a truly deep story. This is not just another simple sprite-based mobile game.

If you haven’t heard of it yet, please take a look - it’s a completely new approach to mobile entertainment, using a totally new type of connected, social game to engage users and to bring brands mobile. The technology is complete and working very well, and we are actively seeking our first partners to use the system for their game ideas or brands.

Please feel free to comment on it in this thread. We love constructive feedback and will use it in our future revisions to the system. The mobile development community has always been encouraging and educational, and we want to thank the people that have helped us shape the system into what it is today.

I’m Thinking of You

Most people think of others at random times during the day. They try to make a mental note to send them an email or call them when they have time. But mobile messaging like SMS allows people to just say hi immediately. I feel that the “I’m thinking of you” type of mobile communication is under explored and could be enhanced greatly with simple, quick services that let you tell someone they’re on your mind.

Here’s something that’s moving in that direction. A press release from Trilibis Mobile.

…The mobile gift-giving program, developed, deployed and managed with Trilibis Mobile’s SmartPath(TM) Mobile Publishing Solution, provides a novel and alternative way for Webdate members to communicate and connect with other members.; The Trilibis Mobile-powered service enables Webdate members to deliver a virtual gift — from sending a virtual rose to delivering a virtual kiss — when they communicate with other members. Gift givers can include an optional personal message along with the virtual gift and can select the Send Anonymously option to add a sense of mystery to their virtual gifting. Sent virtual gifts can be viewed on recipients’ Webdate profile pages.

Trilibis Mobile takes advantage of the premium SMS capabilities of SmartPath to send the rich- content messages across all major carriers and nearly all data- capable phones.

Still, in my demographic, there’s a certain hesitation when triggering a mobile message like an SMS. I’m sure in GenY circles, it’s almost assumed you have a messaging plan, but unless I talk to a person regularly, I don’t know if they will get some stupid charge when I send them a quick SMS out of the blue. I might as well be writing “Hi! Thinking of you! That’ll be 5 cents!”
